News from the IAS CALCUTTA CHAPTER

In the second quarter of 2009, the IAS Calcutta Chapter organized a short term course on Power Electronics jointly with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Bengal Engineering & Science University (B.E.S.U), Shibpur, Howrah. The course included lecture sessions and sessions on ‘hands on laboratory experiments’. The lecture sessions were mostly lead by the teaching faculty of B.E.S.U, but also by a selection of invited professors of eminent engineering institutes such as IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University (JU), Kolkata. Below is a listing of the speakers and their areas of expertise:

  1. Dr. Ajit K. Chattopadhyay (B.E.S.U) - Keynote Address: Power Electronics Technology and Applications.
  2. Dr. Sujit K. Biswas (J.U) - Selection and Design of Passive Components for Power Electronics.
  3. Dr. M. B. Patil (IIT Bombay) - Techniques for Circuit Simulation and Circuit Simulation (Transient Analysis).
  4. Dr. Sabyasachi SenGupta (W.B.U.T) - Energy transport
  5. Dr. Mainak Sengupta (B.E.S.U) - Power Electronics pushing ahead the frontiers of electrical energy usage.
  6. Dr. Prasid Syam (B.E.S.U) - Matrix Converter
  7. Ms. Debjani Ganguly (B.E.S.U) - Power Semiconductor Devices and DC Motor Drives.
  8. Dr. Kaushik Mukherjee (B.E.S.U) - Issues related to Control Circuit Design & Implementation in Power Electronic Converters, and a decoupled linear control technique for controlling the performance of a Distribution STATCOM

Each session had between 26 and 38 participants, many of which were IEEE members, and feedback was very positive.

We would like to congratulate the local chapter for their great work in 2009!
